  • Job Summary:

    The ESL Instructor provides quality instruction to adult learners, integrating meaningful classroom activities and valuable experiences that facilitate the students’ learning goals and workforce skills. The goal of this position is to guide adult English Language Learners toward gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This position requires a working knowledge of teaching methods and knowledge of the mission and philosophy of community-based programs. The position requires a close working relationship with partnering organizations, faculty, and other student/outreach services staff. The position requires regular evening hours. Bilingual, bi-literate in Spanish/English is required.

    Essential Functions:

    • Experience teaching ESL to adults.
    • Knowledge of understanding of English grammar as it applies to second language learners.
    • Conduct classes in an engaging, interactive and enthusiastic manner that is facilitative and student centered.
    • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs, abilities and interests by planning and conducting lessons that promote learning.
    • Establish and communicate clear objectives to students.
    • Use a variety of methods to monitor student learning and assess student progress.
    • Assist the Adult Services Coordinator in the evaluation and progress of the ESL program, by coordinating plans and activities to promote the most effective instructional program goals.
    • Client recruitment and follow up.
    • Design and implement weekly lesson plans.
    • Responsible for tracking daily attendance, input attendance in data system and assessing student’s progress throughout the course.
    • Prepare periodic student progress reports to be shared with supervisor.
    • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
    • 1 – 2 years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners.
    • Experience in creative curriculum planning and development.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in written form.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse populations.
    • Strong Organization and problem-solving skills.
    • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
    • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
    • Flexible schedule morning and weeknights are required.
    • Weeknights are required from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm (Monday - Thursday)
    • Employee is required to work an average of 16-18 hrs/week.

    Physical Demands:

    Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station, reach with hands and arms and utilize other equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, and frequent walking, standing and climbing of stairs or ladders in all weather conditions.

    Work Environment:

    A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Appropriate attire for indoor and outdoor duties required.
