  • Job Summary:

    The Community Engagement Specialist will guide and implement SWKEY efforts to engage the general public and community stakeholders in restoring economic vitality and improve the quality of life for the benefit of the people who work, study, and live in Cameron County. Working within the framework of the strategic plan, the Community Engagement Specialist will transform objectives related to community engagement into programmatic initiatives. The core activities of the position include partnership development and maintenance, delivering workshops and presentations, and outreach.

    Essential Functions:

    • Translate relevant goals and objectives of Community Engagement department into initiatives with specific outcomes and target dates.
    • Build and maintain relationships with community partners and coalitions across Cameron County, including participating in initiatives such as Project Grow, My Brother’s Keeper, Migrant Coalition, etc.
    • Conduct presentations at community meetings and attend community outreach fairs and events.
    • Advance the SEEDS (Students Empowered to Explore and Develop Skills) initiative by serving as a liaison with schools and school districts in Cameron County.
    • Organize or assist in the planning and promotion of events including career fairs and expos, forums, job fairs, etc. Conduct Soft Skills and Job Readiness workshops at Workforce Centers as well as at schools and other community-based organizations.
    • Develop systems to distribute information to the community.
    • Other projects, as assigned.

    Other Functions:

    • Travel to attend meetings, community events, off-site workshops, and other activities.
    • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • 60 Semester hours from an accredited university or college with 1-2 years’ experience in community outreach / liaison or relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Creativity, sound judgment and the ability to work at times with minimal direction. The Community Engagement Specialist must be a self-starter and must possess the ability to work under deadline pressure
    • Must have excellent verbal, written communication skills, and demonstrated customer service skills.
    • Knowledge and understanding of local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and policies

    Preferred:

    • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

    Certificates and Licenses Required:

    • A valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license and reliable means of transportation

    Physical Demands:

    • Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas.
    • While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station and other office equipment.
    • Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting.
    • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds

    Work Environment:

    Includes both a typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and local travel, including exposure to heat, cold, inclement weather conditions, and occasional environmental hazards.
