Job Summary:

The Family Engagement Specialist supports parent and family programming as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center located at East Austin College Prep at Southwest Key. In collaboration with Universidad de Padres/Parent University, this role develops a coordinated parent network that empowers parents through personal growth and development.  This program is part of Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) a comprehensive academic program funded by the Texas Education Agency.   This position is required to work evening hours and Saturday mornings.

Essential Functions:

Program Administration

  • Work in partnership with the 21st CCLC Director and East Austin College Prep’s Universidad de Padres/Parent University to develop a learning environment for parents and provide on-going educational support programs.
  • Recruit students and families into 21st CCLC programming and provide Family Support Service workshops on Saturdays or evenings related to areas of child development, college readiness, community resources and learning at home.
  • Promote parent and community volunteers for the program.
  • Distribute supportive information to inform school staff, parents, students and community members of community resources by means of, but not limited to, neighborhood canvassing, online posting, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with the East Austin College Prep and East Austin Children’s Promise administrators and staff to implement programming and obtain resources for students and parents.
  • Work closely with at-risk students and families to ensure they receive continued support for their educational goals
  • Implement after school curricula and programs to support student academic success as needed
  • Stay abreast of current family engagement research, best practices and effective utilization of resources.
  • Report to supervisor weekly on progress, challenges, lessons learned, and any potential modifications being considered.

Other Functions:

  • Attend school meetings and in-service training as specified by campus administration.
  • Provide assistance and support to East Austin Children’s Promise team members in the implementation of programming as needed
  • Maintain professional development requirements to improve skills related to job assignment.
  • Build community partnerships to leverage services and support for students and their families.
  • Participate as a member of the East Austin Children’s Promise team in planning and coordination of activities in support of the initiative as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Completion of some college course work is required.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in communities of high-need and/or in working in out of school time programs
  • Experience in providing child development or parenting skills training; working with families to access resources
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thinks and acts in ways that respect ethnic, cultural and language diversity
  • Ability to work in partnership with others and coordinate a working team in the accomplishment of a project.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Physical Demands:

Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly in both verbally and written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:

General office environment with moderate noise. This position is mostly sedentary, involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel. The position will spend more than half of the time in contact with others. The person should expect at least two – four hours of face- to-face contact and whatever support each participant needs via phone or email.
